They had a room filled with old linens of all sorts. Many were handmade items with elaborate needlework on them. They were selling for so little. As I went through hundreds of items I kept wondering who made them and how on earth did they end up in this sale? Did the creator pass on and did family members not understand or appreciate what was made? Or were there just no family members left? I'll never know the answer, but let me show you one of the incredible finds. It is a gorgeous tablecoth with cross stitch, backstitch, lazy daisies, and appliqué. Every stitch is perfect and the appliqué placement is beautiful and consistent. It also came with 16 matching napkins! There are no stains or imperfections. The whole set cost me $6 and I used it on Thanksgiving Day!

Isn't that amazing? My family certainly admired it.

That same weekend of the tablecloth find, I had a dream come true! I had a secret hope that one day I would find a cool needlework tool and be able to buy it for little because someone wouldn't realize its worth! Well, it happened, and in a very special way to me.

See, I had an across the street neighbor who was a sweet and funny woman in her 90's. She liked to sit on her porch during the summer and enjoy the outdoors and chat with passersby. I often came over and sat for a bit and visited. She really cared about other people and it showed in so many ways. Her name was Mary Ann. She lived in half of the house that she was born in and grew up in. Her sister Helen lived in the other half. Mary Ann had never married but had many nieces and nephews to adore. Her working years had been spent at Pratt & Whitney. She loved pretty china and dolls and costume jewelry. She really didn't need any more of any of these because her house was seriously jammed, but she was unable to resist more. I mean how many sets of china does a single 90+ year old need -- especially when she didn't do any entertaining! But she kept collecting. She had no storage space for any of it, so her lovely treasures were stacked up in piles on her dining room floor and on top of her dining table. These sets probably numbered in the dozens. When I would go inside I'd have to carefully walk around these piles to get in and around her house -- hehehehe! Mary Ann was so cute with her treasures. She just admired them. Looking at them seemed to be enough for her.

SO....when she passed away her family was left to deal with all these treasures. They each took what they wanted and then they had an estate sale. Antique dealers came and grabbed up most anything of value. I went to the sale with my husband. We both wanted to get some little thing to remember Mary Ann by. He chose a funny candle holder that has a mouse standing up on a lilly pad rowing. It's so Mary Ann-ish! And I found an adorable little ceramic piggy bank. We were both satisfied with our little remembrances, and then I decided to poke through the mountain of costume jewelry. Buried among it all was a little plastic bag with an antique sewing kit in it! I recognized what it was immediately, saw it was marked $3 and got it without even looking inside at it!

It is made of brass and "Austria" is engraved onto it. Mary Ann did a lot of traveling in her day and I'm guessing she picked it up as a little souvenir.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bJfwGqBY-Vg/TuzA2Br2uKI/AAAAAAAAAOc/1I9tDVriwd8/s1600/100_2041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The inside of that is a needle holder! Oh, what a treasure! I was able to search online and find that it was likely made around 1920-1930. I saw similar items for sale that weren't in as great condition -- and they were selling for $60-$70.

My husband knew by the look in my eye that I'd found something hot. Neither of us said a word because we didn't want to draw attention to it. When we got out of sight I looked at him and said, "My precious!" LOL!

Yes, I got a great deal, but what is really cool for me is knowing that Mary Ann had used this little sewing kit and having such a sweet remembrance of her!

Sue

Teacups and Teapots!

Tomorrow the ladies of my church are throwing a special Tea for our new pastor's wife -- who happens to love tea. So I had this idea for favors, which sounded simple and wouldn't take long. I made some cut out almond flavored cookies in the shapes of teacups and teapots to be painted with frosting. These are going into little clear plastic bags along with a tea bag, candy coated almonds, and a little card that has an encouraging scripture inside. Decorating those cookies took much longer than I had thought! LOL! My pal Jen came over last night and worked with me for about 2 hours to decorate them, and then I finished up the rest in another hour. Then there was the cleanup! But I think they came out pretty cool. We stuck to pastel colors to go with other decorations and let our imaginations run wild. So here's how they came out. (Click on the picture to see them larger.)

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zctUF7SGTqM/TmqM6FbiStI/AAAAAAAAANo/zxPIOX_NtT0/s1600/teacup+cookies+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; But if I ever do it again, I'll get more people to help me decorate them so that it won't take quite so long. I think they came out pretty cute -- and I can tell you that they are yummy because Jen and I "had" to eat one when it broke in half (hehehehe).

So I should give an update on our Tropical Storm Irene damage. Once the power cables were fixed, the tree was removed revealing damage to our house. A branch has pierced our roof and shot out the other side. There is some other small damage -- bent gutters and siding, and miscellaneous damage to the roof. It's pretty disappointing since our roof is brand new. Some folks were out today looking it all over. The house was built in 1956 and the siding is no longer made. They are batting ideas around as to how to fix it. They are going to try and find some of the siding somewhere and will get back to us next week. Meanwhile, my house has a very visible boo-boo.

Well, time to go turn those cute little cookies into favors for the Tea tomorrow! It's going to be fun!

Sue

Tropical Storm Irene blows through!

Well, we made it through what became Tropical Storm Irene in central Connecticut. We're okay, but we have a mess to deal with. Dad, Michael and I were all looking out a picture window when we saw a sudden downward gust of wind slam down a huge pine branch in front of our house.

It is resting on power lines and so there is nothing we can do about removing it until CL&P gets out here. We never lost our power, but they will have to turn the power off to take care of this problem. CL&P obviously has more urgent work to do so we're guessing it could be a couple weeks until they are able to help us.

Our backyard is so full of tree debris it's crazy. Dad is in his own little world of happiness because he has loads of yardwork to do. He lives for that!

Our cottage at Camp Bethel is also safe, as are all the other buildings there. However, they lost power early on in the storm and are not expected to get it back in that area for at least a week. There are many downed trees. Here's a picture of a tree branch that fell in front of our cottage. Our cottage is the one on the right. Some friends took the picture of us, and removed the branch from the area, too! We haven't gone there ourselves yet as we have enough to deal with on the home front.

My brother Lee is involved with emergency services in Lyme, CT, which is near the shoreline. He sent me a text message today letting me know that many houses were damaged, and about 7 were totally lost. One person died. Trees are down and almost the whole area is without power. A helicopter dropped food and water to them. The emergency personnel are working around the clock and taking rest in shifts. Sounds like it has been tough there.

It is a relief that the hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it reached us. Things could have been so much worse.

Here's some videos I took of the storm as it came through our area.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; A few moments to update my blog!

Getting ready for the Sturbridge Stitcher's Hideaway (July) consumed a great deal of time -- and then there's taking care of dear ol' Dad.

Dad just stopped in to say good night to me. He had already removed his hearing aids for the night, which means he's practically stone death, and which also means if he talks to anyone it's more like shouting at the top of his lungs because he can't hear himself! LOL!! So dad just said,

"SEE YOU IN THE MORNING!"

We live close to a cemetery, and I'm pretty sure he just woke up some of the dead.

Dad's all excited about tomorrow, because we are leaving for 10 days at our cottage at Camp Bethel, which is holding its annual Camp Meeting. Camp Bethel is an interdenominational Christian camp ground. My Dad has been going there since he was a baby. He met my Mom there. In fact, their families knew each other from attending Camp Meeting (Mom's family was from FL, Dad's from CT). When my Mom was born, she was given my father's mother's name, Iva June. Who knew she'd end up marrying into that family! So, for awhile, there were two women named Iva June Watkins.

So anyway, Dad has short-term memory loss. He knows Camp Meeting is coming up and he's quite excited about going. However, he can't keep straight what day/time we are leaving and has asked me probably 10 times today about it. Unfortunately, we won't be able to leav for Camp until mid-afternoon, so he'll probably ask me 10 more times tomorrow. LOL!

Here's a pic of Dad taken a couple months ago. He was clearing leaves and branches out of a miniature golf course at Camp Bethel. I swear, he puts most younger men to shame!

I've managed to get in some stitching. I made this for my buddy Deb, who has a thing for bees.

It's a Prairie Schooler design, now OOP.

And then I recently stitched "Summer Garden" by Thea Dueck of Victoria Sampler. I LOVE this.

What immediately drew me to this design is the girl sitting at the bottom in a chaise lounge -- because my Mom had captured a photo of me when I was perhaps 8 years old doing the same thing. Mom loved that picture and for some reason liked to say that I looked like a movie star in it! Ha! Must have been my cool shades. :)

I also designed a freebie for the attendees at the Sturbridge Stitcher's Hideaway, which I named Hear the Sea Call. It's a simple piece, but what's cool is that little shells and sea glass and fish carved from shells embellish it.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0UNAZEXZFwc/TjC63_KhkKI/AAAAAAAAANA/kkPa_n2CF_8/s1600/Best.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I was very excited to find some pincushions! The largest one has a 5.25 inch diameter. The material is a lovely vintage cotton print, and it has a strap allowing one to carry it or hang it (cost $3). The smaller pincushion is made from wool fabric (cost $2). The scissors are US made, are 3" long, super sharp, and cost me $2! The cotton crocheted pineapple is interesting. There were 13 of them in a little bag for $2. Don't know what I will do with them, but I couldn't leave them behind! I saw so many things in this particular shop, but these are the ones that I couldn't leave behind. Some of the little antique shops in out of the way places are where I discover my little finds.

It was really nice to get away for awhile without any responsibilities. Dad had a seizure a few weeks ago and it seems to have impacted his memory and understanding even more. Of course, I am happy to help him during this time in his life when he needs me, but it sure is nice to get a breather now and then. I picked up a yummy veggie wrap at a funky little deli and ate it alongside a stream that was rushing and roaring from all the spring snow melt. So relaxing!

So now that I'm home much more, I've been playing around with recipes and it's been fun! I'm always on the lookout for healthy options, especially low-fat and low-carb because of the dietary needs of our household. I also enjoy finding tasty vegetarian options. I then enter the recipe into Spark Recipes, which will calculate the nutritional value per serving. So helpful!

So I thought I'd share some of my recipes. Here's one my husband and I call Mexican Pizza. This is not a low-carb option, but if you keep your portion within reason it's fine for a meal and makes a nice vegetarian option.

Mexican Pizza

Ingredients

1-1/4 C Southwest Style Salsa

1/2 C chopped onion

1/2 C chopped green pepper

1 C Red Kidney Beans

3 oz. shredded Monterey Cheese

1 Boboli

Nutritional Info: Fat: 5.8g, Carbohydrates: 34.6g, Calories:228.0, Protein: 10.6g

Top Boboli with salsa, then beans, onion, pepper, and lastly the shredded cheese. Bake at 450 for 15-20 minutes. One serving is 1/8 of a pizza. Sometimes I like to saute the peppers and onions in a small amount of olive oil first. I don't always use a boboli either. Sometimes it's pre-made pizza crust, and often it's thin whole wheat pizza crust. What you use for the crust, obviously, changes the nutritional information. It can also change the baking time, too. Follow the directions that come with your pizza dough to make sure you bake it at the right temperature/time. After topping the crust with the salsa, I add the beans, peppers and onions. Last of all I add the cheese. This is a quick meal to throw together, and it's very yummy! We use medium strength salsa, but if you want a bigger kick, go for the hot stuff.

This past weekend I visited some of my family and it was so nice! I hadn't seen most of them since Christmas. My niece Lauren was visiting from FL, so that was a special treat. Everyone is doing great, and Dad enjoyed seeing them all so much.

The star at all our family gatherings now is my little great niece Mckenzie who is adorable and sweet beyond belief. At about 20 months of age her personality is really emerging. She loves the outdoors, playing mommy to her babies, helping Mom cook, playing dress up, and even playing jokes on her Pa-Pa (my brother). At Pa-Pa's house there is a gate that goes in front of the stairs to keep Mckenzie safe. Mckenzie knows that she's not supposed to go up there. One day when she was visiting and her Pa-Pa was in another room, she went over to the gate and fiddled with the latch to catch Pa-Pa's attention. Thinking he had left the gate unlatched, he ran into the room only to find Mckenzie up against a wall across from the gate waiting for him to come flying in! Mckenzie doubled over in laughter to see her little joke worked! Hehehehe....

Here's the little rascal peeking out after hiding from her parents behind a bookcase.

That is one very much-loved little girl!

Sue

Maple Festival!

Now I know that Spring is really around the corner! Today was the Hebron Maple Festival held in Hebron, CT. The sap is running from the Maple trees and syrup and other goodies are already being made. Dad and I went and had a fun day just taking in the warmer weather and the festival.

Our first stop was to a local church, which held a craft fair. We saw some beautiful items there -- handmade beaded jewelry, colorful scarfs and pocketbooks, hand-blown glass, unique bird houses, and so much more. I purchased a round mirror that had been decorated to capture a bit of the sea. If I can figure out how to take a good picture of it, I'll post it here. My plan is to hang it in the bedroom wall of my cottage.

There were some fun food items offered at the festival - maple cotton candy, maple nut ice cream, maple ham sandwiches, etc.

Next we visited several antique shops. I love to look at old linens and such. You just never know what you'll find. I picked up two items. I'm not sure exactly how this piece was made. When I first glanced at it I thought it was crochet -- but when I looked closer at it I thought it was woven with surface work added. Click to see it larger and see what you think the technique might be. It feels like cotton.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 291px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CKbryz-nLsk/TXvvmorgPlI/AAAAAAAAAKs/SP4r0xFrNmo/s400/woven%2Bwork%2Bmaybe.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583319610089815634" />

I found this little appliqued hand towel that was just sweet. I'm hanging that one in my bathroom -- a perfect color match.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8HV-0gWLq7Q/TXvwFYW3geI/AAAAAAAAAK0/vKiN4WJ_g4U/s400/applique.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583320138284237282" />

I can't seem to resist little hand towels and hankerchiefs with embroidery and cutwork. They are usually sold very inexpensively - a couple dollars or so. I have a drawer of them and like to just take them out and fondle them all! LOL!!

I can't help but wonder who made the pieces I find. I end up paying a few dollars for something that probably took who knows how many hours to make. I wonder who made the pieces and how they ended up in a pile in some antique shop.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 382px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KKJdxqOmgnU/TXvyGJDeE_I/AAAAAAAAAK8/0xEQFH5xIkw/s400/Becky.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583322350379471858" />
Afterwards, Dad and I continued our Maple Festival fun by going to a small cafe for a yummy lunch of maple nut waffles with real maple syrup, sausage, and hot coffee. Mmmm. As we waited for our order to arrive, I put my new linen finds on the table and was examining them again when the waitress came over to look at them. Her name is Becky, and as it turns out, she loves cross stitch and embroidery! Becky was also wondering if the piece above was woven rather than crocheted. We were very curious about it! It was a nice surprise to meet another needlework fan at the cafe.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0-bjlB6sEiw/TXvy30hpIeI/AAAAAAAAALM/mqChqJXaGRM/s400/cafe.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583323203862340066" />

It felt so good to get out and about after this looooong winter. After we left the festival, I just wasn't quite ready to go home so we drove to Michael's to pick up a frame for the "Always Kiss Me Good Night" stitching I did for my husband. After I get it stretched and framed I'll post another picture, which should do it better justice.

Speaking of pictures, I'm thinking I need to invest in a better camera because so many of the photos I take are blurring up on me. I had to scan the pictures of today's finds in order to post them here. Looks like I need to do some research on cameras!

Sue

Hallelujah! Spring is on the way!!! Our snow is only about a foot deep now, and in some places we can see patches of ground!

What a winter!! It was really starting to get to me. At one point when it was about 4' deep I "planted" some flowers to cheer myself up -- and to entertain my neighbors.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_7bjg6oM_A0/TXkmctl120I/AAAAAAAAAJk/wUAyVwe8OlE/s400/Spring%2Bis%2Bcoming.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582535487818947394" />

It was a very welcome break from my cabin fever to go to the Stitcher's Hideaway Alumni Winter Escape retreat. What a great time we had! It was totally Stitcher's Gone Wild! The conversations and laughter were so wonderful. We stitched, talked, accumulated more stash, laughed, and feasted on catered meals for 2 whole days and nights! Paradise! I'll be writing about our time together to post on the Stitcher's Hideaway website soon.

I actually managed to get some stitching done in between being silly and chatting with everyone. I finished up these two "Songs of the Seasons" by Prairie School (sorry, folks -- it's out of print now). I stitched them over one and changed the linen and some of the floss colors.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 204px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SRWMcQMQMjY/TXknoVJ4eaI/AAAAAAAAAJs/vh30jm95xIE/s400/Songs%2Bof%2Bthe%2BSeason.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582536786929285538" />

By the way...I found out that you can click on these photos to see them larger.

Next I did all the basting for my next project -- "Sweet Pea Gazebo Sampler" by Thea Dueck of Victoria Sampler. I'll be working on that as soon as the weather starts warming up. Why? Because I have SSD (Seasonal Stitching Disorder) and don't like stitching on summery designs in the winter, etc. Weird, I know.

Then I worked on "The Bunny Run Around" by Theresa Layman. This design is done all in French and Colonial knots on muslin. I have quite a bit of this design done and am now just filling in background color, which made it a great project for me to work on while chatting and laughing with all the other stitchers. The instructions say that there are approximately 1100 knots per square inch. I find it hard to believe -- but that's what it says! So, I'm thinking I'm a pretty sick individual for taking on this design -- but I do love it!

I finished up some great projects last year. This one was made for my niece Hilary and her husband Alex Rose. I altered "Good Friends Sampler" by Victoria Sampler to turn this into a wedding sampler. The colors and design were so perfect for them. At some point, now that the winter will soon leave us, we'll be getting together to pick out a frame for it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 147px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qlRblg4UpUc/TXkp2DS0qSI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/l2KK28-1fo0/s400/Rose%2BWedding%2BSampler.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582539221676370210" />

I also completed another Victoria Sampler design -- "Sturbridge Kitchen Garden" -- which Thea Dueck designed and taught at the Sturbridge Stitcher's Hideaway Retreat in 2009. The design depicts scenes from Old Sturbridge Village.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 257px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DEIzsgMgDxI/TXkqP-t2ybI/AAAAAAAAAKE/ak1lXd1Ryq4/s400/Sturbridge%2BGarden.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582539667124177330" />

I finished the "Martha Washington Sampler" by Dawn Fisher of Morning Glory Needleworks. Dawn designed this piece for the Sturbridge 2010 Stitcher's Hideaway Retreat. Each band represents something in Martha's life. Dawn was an awesome instructor! She is also a history buff and so she shared a lot about Martha's life with us. It was so interesting and fun!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 186px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MeMnTqFqh5o/TXkv1FeQBDI/AAAAAAAAAKc/ie7cPYDl0L8/s400/Martha%2BWashington%2BSampler%2B%25282%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582545802151068722" />

I also finished "Always Kiss Me Good Night" by Dawn Fisher of Morning Glory Needleworks. This was a Christmas present for my husband but I had a difficult time getting it done. I had plans to complete the very last part on Christmas Eve -- but my husband just wouldn't go to sleep so I could work! LOL!! So when I gave it to him on Christmas morning, it only said "Always Kiss Me Good"!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 271px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-onAbq4wjTzM/TXkwJZf9VkI/AAAAAAAAAKk/I0BvPVxcQfc/s400/Always%2BKiss%2BMe%2BGood%2BNight.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582546151124325954" />

I have a WIP I'll be working on during the next few weeks before my SSD kicks in and I switch to the Sweet Pea Gazebo Sampler. It's "The Bay State - Massachusetts" by Jeannette Douglas Designs. She taught this at the Sturbridge Stitcher's Hideaway 2007 retreat and I have it on a frame about 40% done. It's gorgeous. Gee, I hope I can finish it before my SSD hits me!

Jeannette will be teaching at the Mystic 2011 Stitcher's Hideaway Retreat -- another new project. Can't wait to see it!

One of the many things I enjoy about the retreats is seeing what everyone else has stitched during our Show 'n Tell sessions. I am truly amazed at how awesome we are!! LOL!! At the recent Alumni Winter Escape Retreat there were so many amazing works of art -- many different techniques involved -- and even some knitting and jewelry to see. Some items had been entered into fairs and had received Blue Ribbons and Best of Show! I'm telling you, stitchers are cool!!

Until next time -
Sue

Enough already!!

Really, I don't dislike snow. I always look forward to the first couple of snowfalls -- but when it's over 3' high in your yard and higher in piles from plowing, well, it's just wrong. We had many storms that year, but they were spread out over months. This year January has buried us. But let's take a moment to enjoy Jim's verse:

March 9, 1996
100 Inches -- And Counting

It is winter.
It has always been winter.
It will always be winter.
Spring will never come.
Spring is not for us.
Spring is for the privileged.

It has just snowed.
It has always just snowed.
If it has not just snowed, it is snowing.
If it is not snowing, it is going to snow.
Snow is evil.
Snow is plutonium.

It is cold.
It will always be cold.
It has always been cold.
Warmth will never visit here.
Warmth fears cold.
It is gloomy.
It will always be gloomy.
It has always been gloomy.
When skies are not gloomy, it is cold.
And cold begets snow.

It is depressing.
It will always be depressing.
It has always been depressing.
We are trapped in a Russian novel.
There is only dark mood.

It is winter.
It has always been winter.
It will always be winter.
Will it never concede?
Will it never end?

Nyet.

My great niece Mckenzie does not like snow in her face, even though her rosey cheeks are adored by all.
She does not mind winter fashions. My husband and I enjoyed looking at each ornament and remembering where it came from. Some ornaments were gifts to us, some are homemade, some are from places we have visited, and some are from our childhood. My 89-year-old Dad sat and watched all the activity, just smiling away.

We always hang up our stockings early because we enjoy looking at them so much. When Michael and I were first married, I stitched these two stockings. These were the third and fourth projects I ever stitched, and they are entirely done in cross stitch. My dear friend Val "finished" them for me -- she's awesome!!

The dinosaur ornament was one Michael was given during his childhood. It's very fragile and we handle it with tender loving care!

One year I made a lot of these little felt mice and gave them out as gifts. Belinda Karls-Nace of Blue Ribbon Designs was the instructor. She was awesome! She was really into ceramics when I was a little girl. She would have made these in the early 1950's. My Dad made the manger.

We really enjoy Christmas at my house but, like many others experience, there will also be a little sadness as my mother passed away this year at the age of 90. To think that I was blessed to have almost 90 Christmases with her! Amazing.

Here's my Mom with my older brother and me in 1951.

And here's one of me with my younger brother -- quite excited over our stockings on Christmas morning!

I was remembering today how I came to my Dad as a young girl and asked him if there was really a Santa. He replied, "What do you think?" I told him I wasn't sure and that some of the kids at school said there wasn't. He said, "Well, you'll find out." Oh, how I wanted him to tell me that YES, there was a Santa...but he didn't. So I went to bed that night not really sure about anything.

The next morning when I woke up -- the living room had been transformed, stockings filled, and presents under the tree. Of course, I was very excited...but I still wasn't sure about Santa. And then...I went over to the fireplace to get my stocking and happened to look inside the fireplace! There was a HUGE footprint in the ashes!!! WOW!! Was I ever excited! It never occurred to me that anyone but Santa would have left that footprint there, so I was a very enthusiastic believer again -- LOL!!

Just recently Santa dropped by for a visit at the Mystic retreats. Santa and I are old friends after these many years. It was great to have Belinda meet him, too!

Ho-Ho-Ho!!

Sue

Adventures with Dad!

My Dad is 89 years old and lives with my husband and me. He's adorable. He also has dementia from some mini-strokes. His short term memory is shot. But one thing he had been clear about for well over a year was his desire to go to the National Marine Corps Museum in Triangle, VA and the National WW II Memorial in D.C. Finally, on November 1, my brother Lee, his wife Mary, and I were able to make that dream come true for Dad.

It took us a whole day to get there from Connecticut, and the journey left Dad a bit disoriented and tired, but after a good night's sleep he was no worse for the wear, so off we went to the Museum. See, Dad was a Marine during WW II. Actually, it seems that it is true that "Once a Marine, always a Marine" because Dad has maintained the Marine crew cut and disciple all these years! I would say that the two things that impacted my father's life the most are his faith in God and his time in the Marines. He later wrote a book about his adventures:
http://brothersinbattle.net/

We didn't really know what to expect at the Museum, except that we knew there would be a lot of Marine history. Wow, was there ever! The place is huge and the exhibits take you from 1775 through the Vietnam War days. We ended up being there for 7 hours!

The Museum's soaring design is meant to evoke the image of the flag raisers of Iwo Jima.

In the WW II section, Dad saw many of the weapons that he once used.

On the way home we stopped at the WW II Memorial. We were all seeing it for the first time and were quite impressed. It was a very well-planned and thoughtful tribute. This shot was taken at the entrance to the memorial.

There were some incredible brass reliefs along the entry way that depicted U.S. involvement in the war. They were each about 4' by 1.5'. The first was one that showed Americans receiving word of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, then it showed people enlisting, various armed forces, battles, people back in the States doing their part, and finally the people returning home and to their loved ones. I took a bazillion pictures but they are too much to post here. However, here is one of the news of Pearl Harbor. I wish the picture could do it better justice.

I hope that all who read this will have the opportunity to see this amazing memorial

This was an amazing adventure for my Dad, and we were all so happy to be able to do this with him and help make his dream come true.

I often wonder what our world would be like today if the young men and women of that generation didn't step up to the plate and give of themselves so willingly. Someone made a comment to my Dad about his being the "Greatest Generation". My Dad didn't agree. He felt that they might instead have been the "Most Challenged Generation." He believes in his heart that the youngest generation today would do the same if faced with the same circumstances.

To all our WW II vets, I offer a big THANKS for the freedom we enjoy in this country today!

Mystery Solved!

Finally I've learned about the piece of needlework I found in a Vermont antique shop that had me stumped! After looking on-line quite a bit, I became convinced that I was looking at chain stitch made with a tambour hook.

As I researched further, I found a tambour expert -- Robert W. Haven -- and sent him pictures of the piece. Wow! Did I ever get some answers!

First of all, Bob Haven is an Associate Professor of Costume Technology and Costume Director at the University of Kentucky. His background is amazing!

Bob says it was definitely worked with a tambour hook and explained how he could tell. He thought that the darker threads were far less puffy, indicating that the core is wrapped in something, probably a gilt or foil covered paper as was common. He said it was difficult to know its age and that the tambour hook was not a common embroidery tool even in the "old days." The art was not widely known in the US so it could have been made by someone who came from Europe in the 19th century.

Then he said that the actual design has overtones of traditional English crewel work, but that I could also check out country French designs from both Canada and western Coastal France -- particularly areas around major ports / departure points to the Americas.

He further suggests that since it was never made up into anything, it might have been someone's "learning piece." It only contains the one chain stitch but executed very skillfully. "It's rather fun to imagine the hands that worked the piece, perhaps by gas light or even candlelight in a remote cottage in VT, or Canada. What other work did these same hands produce? In the hands of a good creative write this piece of hand work could be the basis of a potentially thrilling story!"

Spoken like a true needlework addict!!

So...now I have at least some of the mystery solved -- and that opened up a great opportunity! I invited him to give a lecture at the Sturbridge 2011 Stitcher's Hideaway Retreat! He's got a great sense of humor and has come up with a lecture topic: "From Curiosity to Addiction, a Journey through Needlework with no Road Map." I am so excited about this!! My husband and I are both looking forward to meeting him in person!

Here's a picture of Bob doing tambour beading.

And here's a link about Bob's very interesting background and the lecture he'll be giving at Sturbridge on July 8th.

There are some great links on the bottom of that page about him. In addition to tambour beading and costume design, he enjoys miniature doll houses! He's made the most fascinating miniatures -- including itsy bitsy oil paintings. SO cool.

So...if things can ever calm down for me, I'd like to do some research to see if I can recognize the design in my little antique! But right now...I've just opened registration for the Sturbridge retreat and things will be hopping for awhile! LOL!

Sue

It just now took me 5 minutes to figure out how to make a new post! Pathetic!

Would anyone like to solve a mystery for me? I found this piece of rather old looking stitched linen among a pile of white hankerchiefs in an antique store. The piece is done entirely in chain stitch. I can tell that it is done almost entirely in silk threads -- except for the dark brown, which feels very coarse. I've read that long ago it wasn't uncommon for people to use human or horse hair in their stitching. I could easily believe that it is horse hair in this case.

So the thing is, what's up with it being done entirely in chain stitch? Is this something that was popular during a certain period of time, and if so, during what time period? What country would this style have originated from and was it common in the USA at some point? Does anyone out there know?

Sue

Stitcher's Hideaway gets a blog!

Wow!
